The English and Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with Wales will face off in the same pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major early clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' surprise early exit.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Portugal, both made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, round out that Pool D.

Notably, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will introduce a last-16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
